Homeland as a multi-scalar community: (Dis)continuities in the US security/safety discourse and practice

This article takes steps from the birth and consolidation of “homeland” as central discursive engine US national security enterprise; issue with dominant scholarly interpretation geographical spatial implications its emergence in terms dissolution space spatialization policy ( Bialasiewicz et al., 2007 : 416). We adopt a multi-scalar approach to exploring discourse/practice, comparing performativity global local practice/discourse public safety—with empirical focus on case Memphis (TN). Our main arguments are that homeland builds same performative elements certain conception “community”, it has become safety policymaking at scale; homeland/community is expression never-ending movement production geographies “good” “evil”, made coexistence centrifugal (pushing problems away) centripetal (incorporating any given outside) dimensions.
